Jay Wadley’s Score for Sci-Fi Drama SWAN SONG Released by Lakeshore

SWAN SONG is a 2021 Apple Original Film science fiction drama film written and directed by Benjamin Cleary and produced by Mahershala Ali, Rebecca Bourke and Jonathan King. Set in the near future, Ali portrays a terminally ill man who explores a heart wrenching, emotionally complex solution to save his wife and son from grief by duplicating himself as a clone without them knowing. As Cam grapples with whether or not to alter his family’s fate, he learns more about life and love than he ever imagined. SWAN SONG explores how far we will go, and how much we’re willing to sacrifice, to make a happier life for the people we love. In the near future,

Lakeshore Records released the SWAN SONG digital soundtrack last week, featuring music by Jay Wadley (I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS). The transcendent score evokes deeply felt emotions while maintaining a striking sense of space and minimalism.  The Apple Original Film premiered in theaters and globally on Apple TV+ on December 17.

The emotionally compelling and thought-provoking film is helmed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Benjamin Cleary (STUTTERER), from an original screenplay written by Cleary and produced by Anonymous Content and Concordia Studio. The film stars Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Awkwafina, Glenn Close, and Adam Beach.

Says Wadley: “My inspiration for the score for SWAN SONG was drawn from connecting with Cam’s profound love for his family and tapping into his internal struggle, sense of loss, and urgency of his monumental dilemma. The score takes a deliberate and restrained approach to communicate giant feelings, playing off of Ben Cleary (director) and Masanobu Takayenagi’s (cinematographer) discussions of the Japanese minimalist concept of ‘Ma.’ There’s a sense of openness and space in the composition, production, and instrumentation of the score that allows moments to breathe while still providing the emotional undercurrent of tension, love and sense of urgency to the unfolding story.”
