Robin Carolan & Sebastian Gainsborough (<-aka Vessel) Score New Robert Eggers’ Historical Fantasy Epic THE NORTHMAN

THE NORTHMAN is a 2022 historical epic fantasy film directed by Robert Eggers (THE WITCH, THE LIGHTHOUSE), and co-written by Eggers and Sjón. The film stars Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe, and is based on the legend of Amleth, and follows a young Viking prince on his quest to avenge his father’s murder.

Back Lot Music will release the official digital soundtrack album on April 22, 2022; the film releases the same day via Focus Features. The album features the film’s original music composed by Robin Carolan & Sebastian Gainsborough (aka Vessel).

Robin Carolan created experimental imprint Tri Angle, an English record label based in London and New York, in 2010. The label closed its doors in early 2020, having rendered a lasting mark on the electronic scene as one of the few labels that have maintained a consistent and coherent sonic identity after a full decade of existence. Electronic producer and composer Sebastian Gainsborough (Vessel) began his career as a producer of bass driven, experimental electronica both as a solo artist as well as under numerous guises alongside and as part of Bristol’s ‘Young Echo’ Collective, most notably as a member of Killing Sound. His trio of albums on Tri Angle, Order of Noise, Punish Honey and Queen of Golden Dogs have been widely acclaimed, and he’s become noted for his electronic, instrumental, and avant garde music.

Writing about THE NORTHMAN score in England’s loudersound website, Merlin Alderslade reported that the score “sounds every bit as epic as it looks, utilizing traditional Nordic wind and string instruments alongside booming drums and swelling orchestral elements. The result is a soundtrack that swirls between stiflingly intense and hauntingly beautiful, complimenting Jarin Blaschke’s visuals to create a world that feels both mythical and palpable.”
